There Be Dragons?

Map of North America from 1566 showing both Terra In Cognita and Mare In Cognito.

Terra incognita (with "incognita" stressed on the second syllable) is the Latin term for "unknown land", used in cartography for regions that have not been mapped or documented. The equivalent on French maps would be terres inconnues (plural form), and some English maps may show Parts Unknown.

Similarly, uncharted or unknown seas would be labeled Mare incognitum, Latin for "unknown sea".

An urban legend claims that cartographers labelled such regions with "Here be dragons". Although cartographers did claim that fantastic beasts (including large serpents) existed in remote corners of the world and depicted such as decoration on their maps, only one known surviving map, the Lenox Globe, in the collection of the New York Public Library [1], actually says "Here be dragons" (using the Latin "hic sunt dracones"). [2] Terra incognita may also refer to the imaginary continent Terra Australis.

During the 19th century terra incognita disappeared from maps, since both the coastlines and the inner parts of the continents had been fully explored.

The phrase is now also used metaphorically by various researchers to describe any unexplored subject or field of research.

I added the "T" for a affirmative statement of the There Be Dragons as a question at hand?

"Here be dragons" is a phrase used by cartographers to denote dangerous or unexplored territories, in imitation of the infrequent medieval practice of putting sea serpents and other mythological creatures in blank areas of maps.

The earliest known use of this phrase was in the Latin form "HC SVNT DRACONES" (i.e. hic sunt dracones) on the Lenox Globe[1] (ca. 1503-07). The term appeared on the east coast of Asia. Earlier maps contain a variety of references to mythical and real creatures, but the Lenox Globe is the earliest one to bear this phrase.

So you got to know that with a statement like, What are the Odds, we might have a truly based reasoning that underscores the importance of presenting the work toward the answer for every statement that causes uncertainty? Not assigning Dragons to unknown territories in terms of new information.

I just want to point out something that has crossed my mind in terms of our past. That in the ole European identification processes names were given to people by the places they had inhibited.

IN the "Bloggery world" such titles it seems ring true, as we say the name of the person and the the title of the blog respectively? How ancient this idea then to bring such a idea to mind here and the histories to the tongue. Try saying this once, twice and as many times as you like, let it roll off your tongue....."Bee and Stefan of Backreaction," or "Clifford of Asymptotia." Yes, it has a ring to it doesn't it:)

Okay, so where am I going with this?

The End of the World Scenarios?

In a paper published in 2000 with the title “Might a Laboratory Experiment Destroy Planet Earth?” Francesco Calogero, a nuclear physicist at the University of Rome and co-winner of the 1995 Nobel Peace Prize for his work with the Pugwash conferences on arms control, deplored a tendency among his colleagues to promulgate a “leave it to the experts” attitude.

“Many, indeed most, of them,” he wrote, “seem to me to be more concerned with the public relations impact of what they, or others, say and write, than in making sure that the facts are presented with complete scientific objectivity.”
Gauging a Collider’s Odds of Creating a Black Hole

What is in the fate of hands who will determine how secretive this world will become Dorigo. That while they advocate their positions on what is shared by our scientists, what can now be brought to bear on the "false thoughts and illusions" that new stories are forever created, while the true sources of knowledge are being clouded?

Do we know better?

Observing a Scientist in Action

Even I can be harsh in my criticisms, and it is my family trait, that when you come from a very large family you tend to care for those less advantaged then others. It's just part of the psychology that we bring to bear, as if a mother taking care of their young, could turn into teachers, "who take are of their students."

In response too "So What Are the Odds?" by Clifford of Asymptotia:)

The Angel and the Demons are here and not here.:) Okay, just a teaspoon of the anti-matter then. No molasses, or anything more profound then?

From "stringevangelism" to "Frank common sense," you've gone to great lengths? But this time, you may have gone to far with these Draconian measures. :)

What next!

The mystic in science is always the infancy of something much more profound? So now being so much more analytical? So easy to denounce our pre-understanding of the larger possibilities, and pass it off to the experts. Then we have all our answers set in stone. Yes!

It is always safer to scoff at what we now determined as safe, but then, who of us hasn't realized that with more knowledge we understood something more? With the reports I had read to update I realized there were a lot of scientists who just did not know what was being talked about, while at Cern, they were quick to dispel what proposals were set forth with the uncertainties. These were respectable attempts at informing the public. There were reports on strangelets that were answered and these were taken seriously.

Least we forget how unsettling the "God particle was" while the Fly's eye was in it's infancy? You see, this is the way of it, and this is the way that those who condemn, light the fires of opposition to what should or should not be revealed to the public.

It is our nature to call this thing a Geon possibly? It's clue to our saying goodbye to men who dream up the nature of things. Should we forget how those who denounced the avenues of string theory were quick to spell out where the genus figures left off, are now much further then some of our good scientists previously understood?

Storms in teacup I, II III, etc.... for sure.:) You were much nicer to the child on the bus.

How wise and prudent our words when there are young ears around to hear, and I have often be scolded by my wife for forgetting about the children. The circumstance in which I am working. So it is not hard to see the reverberations of my not being careful in what I've seen of the children of late whose language has become the reiteration of the circumstance in which they are raised.

So can I say that the young in mind are adults whose ears are listening as well, in the matters of their age, are the students of the process and are listening as well?

Harry Campbell Source from article above.

Beware of the symbolism then used by Dennis Overbye to further this "scoffing at of the ridiculous." These too have a lasting impression. Least we destroy the characters of our heros? See Sir Isaac Newton again for comparisons of what ill fate would be assigned to the ones who reached for the light ,and saw all it's possibilities?

The Devil is In the Details?

So yes there are the creative writers who embellish the situation that help create this hysteria of the uncertainty. Who also bring forth such lovely stories of the fictional that we can somehow relate these events in our time as above?

  • Angels and Demons

  • The Devil, is in the details of a Mirror World?

While the "true cast" is here? :)

Mirror world or Alice in Wonderland, we have a unique way of adding the incredibility to the credible?

    1. Hi Plato,

Another nice and relevant piece. It’s seems almost at times that you read my mind on some issues, with this being one of them. My thoughts on the Chicken Littles and Doubting Thomases’ of the world form much to be the same as your own. It is alarming that this irrational fear that many today express about things like the LHC and others reveal to be more symptomatic of our times then perhaps any other.

As you recall with my reference to Marshal McLuhan with his “The Medium is the Message” theory coupled and fused with Ray Bradbury'sFactoid Culture” there truly is little to wonder about. As I pointed out on Bee’s blog these people are nothing more then Plato’s prisoners who perceive the shadow as reality and more so fear the light. I’m afraid that the internet as any technology has its good and bad side, yet what is most alarming is the bad seems to be a this moment in time winning. Video and factoid reporting has served to increase ignorance, rather then dispel it and along with it exposed and amplified the vulnerability in many to circum to regions of fear that only existed before when mankind was tribal. This and not the LHC is what we should be most fearful of.

      Best,

      Phil

There are some distinctions that I thought I should share here as well so you get some idea of the benefits that I see such a medium. That it can benefit society as well as recognize the factors of it that you have pointed too.

First your points and reference to Marshal McLuhan

Medium is the Message Marshal Mcluhan pointed to the light bulb as a clear demonstration of this concept. A light bulb does not have content in the way that a newspaper has articles or a television has programs, yet it is a medium that has a social effect; that is, a light bulb enables people to create spaces during nighttime that would otherwise be enveloped by darkness. He describes the light bulb as a medium without any content. McLuhan states that "a light bulb creates an environment by its mere presence."[2] Likewise, the message of a newscast about a heinous crime may be less the individual news story itself — the content — and more the change in public attitude towards crime that the newscast engenders by the fact that such crimes are in effect being brought into the home to watch over dinner.[3]

We were familiar with this point about writers leaving a space with which readers can identify and move forward the subject. Bring the reader into a participatory association?

This association reveals another opinion I have about media today along the same lines as you are referring , but to expand the point on what can lead a society to foster this grouped to garner and choir to an uproar. Can you belong to the association of people blogging or not if you do not hold the same opinion?

It was realizing the media could be controlled not as much as China does in the control of it's people, but just as real, the idea the corporate control of the media can foster it's own attitude toward and the one purposely sanction by such conditioning.

There was a need then to have it's new media people not of the ilk of association and articles duly selected to air the corporate opinion, and the very writers themself needing the job, not realizing the very situation that they are being used for.

Alas the medium then becomes an open forum of association that people can still find the differences of opinion. That no conglomerate can charge and control the medium by it's very product, hence instituting the attitude of a free market and community.

At this time I realized how this medium can being used to share the opposing view in light of the one being pushed. To get more information out to the people.

But to go one point further the atrocities that were being done in the slaughter of people in Croatia during a Serbian offence, were the images that were transmitted out of this area by satellite communications, and the pinpointing of mobile tanks units camouflaged and situated by the schools so that they could not be targeted.

So there is no doubt that the gamut of association to this article in reference to LHC may be unsettling from the one perspective, but in terms of "more symptomatic of our times then perhaps any other." The difference and ideals about this medium need to be researched broadly as these times are changing.

I was sympathetic to the timing of Overbye's article as well as the other blogs who were commenting, did not realized some of the facets of research that was going on in new territories? I identified a few of thes ein terms of references to the God Particle as an example as well as the condolences that I spread toward Wheeler's passing and what effect he had on me in terms of the Geon.

I learnt to identify this in scientists as they expose themself to new ideals in terms of these ideologies that are forming in their minds. IN time, and with more information we learn of the deficiency of the thinking as one does not pursue the the relevant information to asses what is going on. That requires work on people's part.Vision by itself is easy, and understanding the depth of that vision is something else.

    3. Hi Plato,

“So there is no doubt that the gamut of association to this article in reference to LHC may be unsettling from the one perspective, but in terms of "more symptomatic of our times then perhaps any other." The difference and ideals about this medium need to be researched broadly as these times are changing.”

I agree that more research is needed and I can tell you where you and others can start. Just go to any blog site that has what I would call an extreme and oft times fearful opinion on matters. That could be the LHC, genetics, religion or some others. First you will discover more often then none that the comment sections to their blogs are subject to review before posting. Now post a comment that is logical, lucid and sincere that proves counter to their claims. I will place you odds, that more times than not, you will never see the comment published.

I'm firmly convinced many are ignorant of the fact that there are those of special interest that use the most despicable tactics to support their cause and I can assure you they are not of the corporate stripe or that of normal government. These supposed do-gooders are the worst pretenders I’ve ever encountered. However, I would argue that the public at large has no idea that their tactics and thereby their motives should be questioned. Worse still is that the soundness of what they say and the logic they employ is all something that few are suspicious of. I’m afraid video and factoids are not enough for most to be able to distinguish the shadows from the light, yet often are actually what causes the confusion. Worst still, they have no idea, that they themselves often form to be these shadows.

      Best,

      Phil

Who of us not lost their way? I must point to what I have learnt in terms of the brain's positioning as we use the forefront to send our messages.

This neuronic pathway extended to this medium has become the next step for our fingertips. Ode to the thinking mind?:)What notes and songs will it sing?

I would contend that the "striving for the light" means that along the way we will encounter some of the things that we ourselves have sown.

This is something about "change and the now" in this state of becoming, is the realization, "that there can be a change in the future." If only.....had we recognized that the elements of this construction, has at it's roots some of the things that were conjured up by the unleashed relativity of our emotive struggle?

That to know of the "fog of life" is to know the there can be this aspiration for light too. Clarity.

To know of this truth in search of self is all that can be done, and in the final measure you must say to yourself, "had I done everything I could to live this truth in my every actions?"

What does this "feather mean" in relation to the scale of measure to the "heart of truth?" The "image is set before the mind," and just as the quandaries of life are to be mulled over, what comes of it?

I could say as well, that my own opinion should be here and here, but it's true too, that I have been deleted so many times that it forced me back here to dig ever deeper and answer the very questions I must then must pose for myself. My own Glaucon?:)

Did Plato fabricate his own conversations to provide a basis for the points to be made? Was Francis Bacon "the Shakespeare" who spoke in face of his government? Was Thomas Jefferson the true draftee of the constitution, or Benjamin Franklin who knew to apply this truth to all of it's people alike.

IN my view, scientists are people too. They do not have to tell me that, but they like too?:)Having the same inflictions any of us lay people do for whatever venture we set before ourselves. It is the struggle, "to persevere" that we learnt previously "fear of the unknown" provided for the groundwork to know better and become then, the more knowledgeable for it?

Would we ever let the "fear of the unknown" stop us from continuing to search for the truths as we have discovered them? To become the very words that "speak of things." We have become them?

Phil:These supposed do-gooders are the worst pretenders I’ve ever encountered. I would of course then ask you to provide for some examples of this. This is a time then that you may speak freely.

The venture it seems can always be a lonely one. But the truth can be known, as it "sounds at the very basis of our being."

Don’t take me wrong for this media does have a potential that we would all like to see realized. It however should not and cannot be the source of all knowledge. I see it as just a guide or perhaps only a menu of what may be explored. There is no replacement for study and contemplation as methods to discovery. One of the best places I have found where many should go is the TED web site. There they can find people of various positions and interest that speak on the issues of our times. For example there are a few that I have watched as of late that when taken together might give the average person a more rounded sense of what we know, who we are and what our most pressing problems form to be.

The first talk is one given by Jill Bolte Taylor called “My stoke of insight” that although about her personal experience in having a stroke gives one a unique insight into who we may truly be as a species and perhaps our potential. The second is by Karen Armstrong called “Charter for Compassion” which talks about how religion has been highjacked to be turned into what it should not be and how belief in general is misunderstood by almost all including those that profess to be religious. The last is a talk given by Martin Rees an astronomer that I find serves to pull this all together in the most modern of perspectives and is entitled “Earth in its Final Century?” I feel that if many of the Chicken Littles and the Doubting Thomases of the world were to look at these carefully they might begin to realized what we should strive to understand and what we should truly be concerned with.

“I would of course then ask you to provide for some examples of this. This is a time then that you may speak freely.”

As to naming names and pointing fingers, I won’t do this, first because I understand that this should be discovered for one's self, so that one can know the truth of it; and more important it would give them recognition they don’t deserve and yet would like to have.

      Best,

      Phil

You don't really mean that Plato was really holding discussions with the two hemispheres of his brain do you?:) A Steve Martin story jumps forth here, that tells about the man with two brains?

"A dialogue in mind then" and the basis of that process is one that needs further clarification in my mind. How to advance any "point of view" with the characters one chooses.

But yes, I agree with you about the essence of the experience people can have, that while revealing technical aspects of our anatomical situation. Also reveals a discovery of this focalization of mind on that recognition of the "I am, that is put forth." As if, Einstein is crossing the Room. Becomes, the centralized location of all that happens around us to a solidification of that moment in that space. I see a possible Heisenberg in that moment.:)

But if we were free of that "I am....," then with no boundaries and distinction between anything within the essence of all energy, then what had we become as we dissolve into that very essence?

Stroke of insight: Jill Bolte Taylor

So who are we? We are the life force power of the universe, with manual dexterity and two cognitive minds. And we have the power to choose, moment by moment, who and how we want to be in the world. Right here right now, I can step into the consciousness of my right hemisphere where we are -- I am -- the life force power of the universe, and the life force power of the 50 trillion beautiful molecular geniuses that make up my form. At one with all that is. Or I can choose to step into the consciousness of my left hemisphere. where I become a single individual, a solid, separate from the flow, separate from you. I am Dr. Jill Bolte Taylor, intellectual, neuroanatomist. These are the "we" inside of me.

Which would you choose? Which do you choose? And when? I believe that the more time we spend choosing to run the deep inner peace circuitry of our right hemispheres, the more peace we will project into the world and the more peaceful our planet will be. And I thought that was an idea worth spreading.

Thanks for these links these are very meaningful to me as well. It sets the stage for further enquiries into how "such a map at the basis of our consciousness" could have revealed this aspect of our left and right brains and where one would inject themself into the left or right.

I'll have to try and explain this in this context later on a I delve further into that discussion at a later time.
